The Island Now - Online News Source

An island is now a place that is fraught with danger. For example, then-President Barack Obama, at one point, planned to turn the island back into an atoll with seawalls and fill in the shallow water. The environmental impact would have been disastrous for the coral reefs and endangered the local marine species, most of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

When Hurricane Irma hit less than three months ago, it destroyed part of the island’s shoreline and caused significant flooding. Now, Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rossello is looking to turn the island into an energy hub in an effort out of “energy independence,” a movement that has gained much traction since President Donald Trump announced he would pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement.

This would mean moving away from fossil fuel-based energy production and instead harnessing solar, wind, and hydroelectric power to create clean energy for the entire US. The plan includes installing wind turbines, solar panels and hydroelectric plants across the island with an aim for energy independence in 20 years.

In response to this potentially dangerous situation, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-California) is pushing for federal funding to help rebuild parts of Houston and other areas still recovering from Harvey.
